TVR 365 A/B Roll Feature Assignment

For this project you will create a feature of approximately 5 minutes describing the process of making Martin guitars. Sound on tape (SOT) footage has been provided which includes an on-camera explanation of how Martin Guitars are manufactured, shots of each phase of the manufacturing process, exterior and interior building shots, and a musical "demonstration" of a guitar.

The talent describes what is being done. You must compress the time while editing the audio so it makes sense. Remember that guitar building is a continuous process and the video should show the process without repeating anything as you proceed from beginning to end. You should not eliminate any steps, while keeping the length of the finished production to 5 minutes or less.

Not all of the footage is useable. It is your job as editor to put together an acceptable piece from the footage provided. Remember, in a demonstration the close-up is an important shot. It can also help you avoid jump cuts.

Logging the Footage

You have been provided with a DVD containing window dubs of an A reel and a B reel, each representing identical footage for this project. Using the KU-TV logging sheets provided, which already have shot descriptions on them, view the window dubs and record an in and out time for each shot. Log only the B reel, as it has non-drop frame timecode, making calculations easier.

Be sure to check the A1 or A2 column when you find audio.

The Paper EDL

Once you have logged all the shots, use another logging sheet to prepare a primitive paper edit decision list (EDL). Since this is a very linear feature, most of your transitions will be cuts. Dissolves are appropriate for changes in location or to bring the on-camera talent in and out. Note where they might be appropriate.

Record your best effort on a logging sheet, including shot numbers, audio, and the inpoint for each shot. Include the original shot descriptions as well.

The On-Line Edit

Check out the On-Line video reels from the student worker. Take them, a 3.5 inch floppy disk and your master tape to your assigned A/B suite and do the following:

1. Roll the master tape at least 2 minutes past the end of your Promo montage.

2. Record technical standards as in the first project.

3. Using your paper EDL as a guide, begin to build your video, paying special attention to the audio on the first pass through the project. Jump cuts can be fixed later with cutaways. Fade from and to black at beginning and end.

4. Record each edit on a KU-TV EDL form. At the end of each editing session, also record your electronic EDL onto a 3.5 inch floppy disk.

5. Once you are satisfied with your project, dub it to DVD using the DVD recorders in G-31 (see Creating DVD Release Prints of Student Projects handout). Include all technical standards!

6. Turn in DVD, logging sheets, preliminary paper EDL and final EDL by the deadline in the Syllabus.

Grading will be based on the following:

        Logging Sheets 5%
        Paper EDL 10%
        Finished EDL 5%
        Technical Standards 10%
        technical quality of video 20%
        technical quality of audio 20%
        aesthetic quality of project 20%
knowledge of A/B roll editing observed 10%
