TVR 365 Class Notes

Course Introduction

It has been said that editing can be learned, but can't be taught. This means that while we can teach you technique and some basic aesthetic theory, it doesn't really sink in until you have to assemble an effective program from raw footage and supplemental material such as music and sound effects.

Editing can be divided into continuity and dynamic. In continuity editing the time line is usually linear (chronological) and editing involves primarily separating the good shots from the bad and setting the timing and pace.

In dynamic editing the context in which we arrange the shots affects the viewer's perception of the story line or content. Techniques like flashbacks and cutaways to alternate plot lines are examples of dynamic editing.
