Around Dutchland, February 1999

by Penny Pyrbred

Once again the Penn-Dutch Pyrs and people wowed the crowd at the Canine Learning Experience in Allentown. The Penn-Dutch booth, managed by Karl Edinger and Gail Hillard, averaged 10 fuzzy ambassadors at a time and proved to be a real traffic stopper. Penny was especially happy to see some new faces such as the charming Christy Skorup along with old timers like Hannah and Woody Manwiller and Blizzard Bankowski (click here for photos).

Clondike Kintsfather was in attendance and sporting a new coat, free from the shaved places necessitated by her chemotherapy for lymphoma. Unfortunately she has had to resume chemo, with the associated "punk look," but she is back in full remission and we wish her well. Penny is thrilled to announce that the Tails on Wheels dog therapy group in Texas has selected Clondike 1998 Dog Hero of the Year. The members made their selection from among therapy dogs discussed on the Internet. They were impressed with Clondike's feats as a therapy dog and by her spirit in facing chemotherapy (click here for photos).

Penn-Dutch Pyrs have been well represented in the local news media lately. Clondike's therapy group was featured in a recent issue of the Kutztown Patriot, and following the Canine Learning Experience, both the Ungers' Pyrs (Chelsea and Tristan) and the Gresses' Pyrs (Brutus and Kayla) were featured in their respective community newspapers.

As Penn-Dutch closes out its 10th year as a Club, we inevitably are losing some of our "founding Pyrs." With this issue we mark the passing of Pearl Bechtel, a wonderful lady who charmed Penn-Dutchies for many years. She will be greatly missed.

Looking ahead, Penny encourages all the people to attend the Annual Meeting, to be held in March this year (see details and directions on page 3). This is, alas, a people-only event, but think of all the fun we Pyrs can have while the folks are away! Rumor has it that Chelsea Bowes is organizing a cyber party on the World Wide Web. The Club needs to hear from a wide variety of members, so come out and bring your ideas for new fun activities.

Speaking of which... Penn-Dutch has been asked to present a Pyr Rescue Awareness Day at the Petco pet store in Easton, PA from 9 am to 1 pm on Saturday, April 10th. Bring your Pyr and let's show the public how much fun Pyr ownership can be. Rescue Pyrs and their stories are especially welcome.

Penn-Dutch is again participating in the Chester County SPCA Walk for Paws to be held on May 2nd at the Oakland Corporate Center, Exton, PA. Come help staff our informational booth or get donations from friends/neighbors for miles walked with your Pyr.

Penny hopes to see lots of Penn-Dutch people and their Pyrs at the spring dog shows in the area (see Upcoming Events) and looks forward to another sensational summer Fun Day, tentatively scheduled for July 24th.

See you soon.
