This footage is read-only, so once you have opened the project by double clicking its icon, be sure to use "Save Project As" and save it in your home directory (House icon) on the Ethernet drive.
The feature highlights Pottsgrove Manor, an historical site in Pottstown, PA. Complete the project according to the following guidelines:
a. Total running time will be exactly 5:00.Once the project is completed to your satisfaction, burn it to a DVD (see Creating DVD Release Prints of Student Projects handout). This release print is the only copy that will be graded. CHECK it after you burn it to make sure audio and video recorded correctly. No matter how good your project file may be, your grade is totally dependent on the quality of the DVD copy! It represents what would go to a dub house or TV station, or directly to the viewer.b. Music should run throughout, bedded very low under narration.
-A 5:00 music bed has been provided. -Music should start full up for the opening title, then fade way under host's open. -Music should fade up at the end until it "pays off." c. CG should fade in over opening shot and ending shot (see project outline for details).
d. Trim clips as appropriate. You do not have to use the entire length of each clip! Edit narration so it makes sense.
e. Cutaways have been provided--use them!
f. Edit the feature according to the project outline.
The finished project must conform to the menu standards dictated in the DVD Creation handout and must begin and end with approximately 1 second of black, with the program fading in and out.
Grading will be based on the following:
DVD format & function 10% technical quality of video 40% technical quality of audio 20% aesthetic quality of project 20% knowledge of non-linear editing observed 10%
Some Tips for Approaching this Project.
1. Using any clip of the front of the house to key the title over will result in a jump cut or "beaming" the host into the shot. Try either the back of the house or a graphic.2. Every shot of the host begins with him in the shot, so use cutaways to avoid jump cuts between segments of narration.
3. Virtually every B-roll shot pans or zooms wildly, and most change direction within the shot (which you should never use). In order to cover the narration, you should create freeze frames at either the beginning or end of a camera move (pan or zoom) and extend the clip to the length required.
4. Most of the narration clips were recorded on only one audio channel, with stray noise on the other channel. Make sure that the good channel is panned center and that the noisy channel is not used. You will also have to adjust volume levels from clip to clip.
5. The music is also not recorded correctly. Make sure it is panned so that it comes out of both speakers. It is common for students to turn in projects with voice coming from one speaker and music from the other!
6. Tips 4 and 5 are much easier to accomplish in the viewer than in the timeline and using the mixer.
7. The only shot of the inside of the linen press is a graphic being held by an unsteady talent whose fingers show at the bottom of the shot. Create a freeze frame and use the Motion Tab at the top of the Viewer to rotate the frame slightly and zoom in to avoid the fingers.
